Dear Faculty of Medicine colleagues,
I am pleased to inform you that the Undergraduate Medical Education (MD) program has launched a comprehensive Teacher Handbook at:
www.md.utoronto.ca/handbook
This online publication is meant to serve as a quick reference guide on many important topics and policies related to teaching in our program.
If you participate in any manner in Undergraduate Medicine – or would like to know more about our program – please click on the link above and familiarize yourself with the Teacher Handbook. You may wish to save a copy of the file to your computer or add it to your “Favourites” list in your internet browser for convenient access in the future.
In particular, please note the following key topics:
1. Page 7: Overall program objectives (based on the CanMEDS framework)
2. Page 26: Structure of the program
3. Page 129: Information on how students are graded
4. Page 154: Faculty development opportunities
5. Page 158: Policy on the general responsibilities of teachers in the program
6. Page 202: Policies addressing student well-being, including what to do if a student receives a needlestick or other injury, how to deal with an incident of student mistreatment, and the expectations for appropriate conduct of teachers
7. Last page: What to do when a problem arises
On behalf of the entire leadership of the UME program, I hope that you will find the Handbook to be useful and user-friendly. If you have any comments about it, please direct them to the administrative coordinator on this project, at jen.anderson@utoronto.ca.
Many thanks for your contributions to the education of our students.
